About Brookside CXO

Local roots. Executive experience. Your growth is our mission.

A local Northern California partner for growing companies, with the capability to serve clients nationwide, built on a practice that was already running long before it carried this name.

The founder should be the last person reconciling the books, not the first.
Our story

Real experience behind a new name

Brookside CXO is a new name on an established practice. Jim Willis built the underlying business over several years before it took on the Brookside CXO identity.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. When a company hands over its books, its payroll, and its benefits, it is trusting judgment that only comes from having done the work before. The operating experience runs deep. The name is what's new.

The focus has stayed consistent throughout: growing companies nationwide, from about 10 employees up, at the point where a bookkeeper in a spreadsheet is no longer enough but a full internal finance and HR team is still out of reach.

How we think about the work

A back office, not a stack of vendors

The difference between a stack of vendors and one back office shows up in the gaps, which is exactly where a founder's time goes.

One relationship

A single team holds the books, the payroll file, the benefits plan, and the HR record at the same time, so nothing has to be explained twice.

Senior judgment

Data entry is table stakes. The value is in someone experienced reading what the numbers mean and saying so before a decision gets made.

Built for growing companies

Everything is scoped for the growing company, not shrunk down from an enterprise model that was never designed for you.

Leadership

Who you will be working with

Two partners, both directly involved in client relationships rather than sitting above them.

His experience spans privately held companies, publicly traded organizations, manufacturing, professional services, multi-site operations, and high-growth businesses. Jim has served in senior leadership roles including Chief Financial Officer, Controller, General Manager, shareholder, and board member, giving him a broad perspective that extends well beyond traditional accounting and finance.

Most recently, Jim served as CFO, shareholder, and board member of Siegfried, where he partnered with the company's President and Managing Principal on strategic planning and oversaw key back-office functions including cash management, accounts receivable, accounts payable, banking relationships, and human resources. During his tenure, the company tripled revenue and quadrupled profit.

Jim has also held leadership roles within Fortune 500 companies such as Toyota and Illinois Tool Works, where his responsibilities included accounting, payroll, inventory management, ERP/MRP systems, compliance, financial reporting, operations, and continuous improvement. His career has consistently required him to understand how individual business functions work together, and how breakdowns between those functions can affect the entire organization.

That experience is central to the philosophy behind Brookside CXO. Jim understands that business owners are often asked to make important decisions in areas outside their own expertise while simultaneously managing multiple vendors, systems, and internal teams. Brookside CXO was created to simplify that challenge by bringing experienced subject-matter experts together as one integrated back-office resource.

At Brookside CXO, Jim works directly with clients to improve financial visibility, strengthen processes and controls, optimize cash flow, develop scalable operations, and provide the executive-level perspective needed to make better business decisions.

Jim holds a Master of Accountancy from California State University, Sacramento, and a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of the Pacific.

Getting started

What working together looks like

No long discovery project before anything useful happens. The first conversation is a review of what you are currently carrying yourself.

  1. A first conversation

We map how your benefits, payroll, HR and finance work is structured today and where the gaps between systems create extra work or cost.

  2. A scoped starting point

You choose the function to hand over first, often benefits, payroll or the books, whichever is causing the most friction.

  3. Transition and first full cycle

We take over the day-to-day work and get to a first clean reporting cycle, so you can see the standard rather than take it on faith.

  4. Expansion when it earns it

Additional services get added when the relationship has proven itself, not because they were bundled into the original contract.
